Humanity and Justice lost? : Safoora’s Case

An M.Phil Student of Jamia Millia Islamia, Safoora Zargar, was arrested under the ‘Unlawful Activities Prevention Act’ (UAPA) for her active involvement in the Delhi Riots in February
2020 and the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). She has been denied bail for the third time on June 4 by Additional Sessions Court Judge Dharmender Rana after a four hour long hearing at Patiala Court in Delhi. She is also the Media Coordinator of the
Jamia Coordination Committee (JCC). This is Zargar’s third unsuccessful denied bail plea.
Her lawyers had moved for bail on April 18, even before the UAPA was invoked against her.
A second application which was filed on 2nd May was also rejected.
Safoora is pregnant and it is clear how risky it is for her to be imprisoned in an overcrowded Jail during the worldwide pandemic. Her pregnancy indeed makes her more vulnerable to the risk of Covid-19 and it also raises questions on the state’s apathy and inhuman nature in putting her and her child’s life at risk due to false accusations.
